Serum glucose agar, a transport medium for Streptococcus pyogenes.
نویسندگان
چکیده
When planning an epidemiological study of streptococcal infection, we were recommended to try serum glucose agar which had proved a useful transport medium in another study.' We compared serum glucose agar with Stuart's transport medium, which was our laboratory's usual transport medium for delicate organisms and with dry serum-coated swabs. We also considered the commercially available systems but found that none was sufficiently cheap and robust for our needs. This brief report describes our assessment of serum glucose agar made in our laboratory.

Enzyme immunoassay for the detection of group A streptococcal antigen.
A competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay for the detection of Streptococcus pyogenes directly from throat specimens or from solid bacteriological medium is described. Group A-specific polysaccharide adsorbed onto treated polystyrene beads, in conjunction with rabbit antibody to S. pyogenes, was used to determine the presence of the polysaccharide antigen. Inhibition values in excess of 65% w...
متن کاملOpacification Domain of Serum Opacity Factor Inhibits Beta-Hemolysis and Contributes to Virulence of Streptococcus pyogenes
Serum opacity factor (SOF) is a cell surface virulence factor made by the human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes. We found that S. pyogenes strains with naturally occurring truncation mutations in the sof gene have markedly enhanced beta-hemolysis. Moreover, deletion of the sof gene in a SOF-positive parental strain resulted in significantly increased beta-hemolysis. Together, these observations...
متن کاملA new alkaline pH-adjusted medium enhances detection of beta-hemolytic streptococci by minimizing bacterial interference due to Streptococcus salivarius.
A new selective medium (CNA-P) that reduces or eliminates the inhibitory activity of bacteriocin-producing Streptococcus salivarius against beta-hemolytic streptococci has been developed and compared with sheep blood agar (SBA) for the sensitive detection of small numbers of beta-hemolytic streptococci in clinical specimens. CNA-P has as its basis a commercial medium (Difco Columbia CNA agar) s...
متن کاملPathogens isolated from clinical mastitis in Murrah buffaloes and their antibiogram
Aim: To determine the etiology of clinical mastitis in Murrah buffaloes and to develop an antibiogram of organisms isolated. Materials and Methods: A total of 564 quarter milk samples of 144 buffaloes suffering from clinical mastitis received in Veterinary College Central Laboratory were inoculated on blood agar, MacConkey’s lactose agar and sabouraud dextrose agar. Bacteria isolated were chara...
متن کاملExpression of Recombinant Streptokinase from Streptococcus Pyogenes and Its Reaction with Infected Human and Murine Sera
Objective(s): Streptokinase (SKa) is an antigenic protein which is secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes. Streptokinase induces inflammation by complement activation, which may play a role in post infectious diseases. In the present study, recombinant streptokinase from S. pyogenes was produced and showed that recombinant SKa protein was recognized by infected human sera using Western blot analy...
